Chocolate Dog Fly Fishing

Waters We Fish

Connecticut has more good fly water than most people expect. I guide on the Salmon River, the Farmington River and a handful of small wild trout streams. Each has its own personality and its own best seasons, so pick a water below to see what to expect, how conditions look right now, and what I have been finding on the water lately.

Trout and warmwater

Salmon River

  • Fly Fishing Only Section
  • State Park Entrance TMA
  • Salmon Cove warmwater

Wooded water that changes character as you move downstream. Spring and fall are prime for trout, and smallmouth take over when summer heats the river.

Year-round tailwater

Farmington River

  • People's State Forest
  • West Branch section hopping
  • Austin F. Hawes Campground

A cold, technical tailwater that fishes in every season. Good for hatch chasing, streamers and longer trips with a campground base.

Wild trout

Small Streams

  • Roaring Brook
  • Salmon Brook

Small, quiet, technical water in Glastonbury. I fish these when temperature and flow are right and rest them when the fish need it.
