FAQs

  • Do I need to bring my own gear?

Nope! We provide high-quality rods, reels, tackle, and flies for every trip. You’re also welcome to bring your own setup if you prefer — just let us know ahead of time so we can plan accordingly. We’re happy to help with outfitting and proper sizing to make sure you’re comfortable and ready for the day.

  • Do you offer GoPro or media packages?

Absolutely! We offer optional GoPro video packages so you can relive your trip and share the highlights with friends, family, or fellow anglers. Whether it’s that perfect drift or your first brown trout on the fly, we’ll capture the moment so you can take it home.

  • What should I wear or bring?

We recommend dressing for the weather and layering for comfort. Bring sunglasses (preferably polarized), sunscreen, and a hat. If you have your own waders or boots, feel free to bring them — otherwise, we can provide or help arrange sizing for your day on the water.

  • Do you guide float trips or wade trips?

We offer both! Most trips are wade trips on Connecticut’s scenic rivers and streams, but we also run float trips from our Flycraft Guide 3-person raft when water levels allow. Each style offers a unique way to experience the river — whether you want to cover more water or slow down and learn the finer details of fly presentation.

  • Will there be a dog on my trip?

Probably! Our mascot Reggy, a 1-year-old, 80-pound chocolate lab, often joins us on float trips. He’s friendly, loves people, and may try to steal your seat (or your lunch). But he’s also great company, keeps you warm if it rains, and adds to the fun.
If you’d prefer a dog-free trip, just let us know in advance — we totally understand.

  • Why do you care so much about the dogs?

Because they’re at the heart of who we are. Chocolate Dog Fly Fishing was built around the joy, loyalty, and spirit our labs bring to every adventure. They remind us that being outside is about more than catching fish — it’s about connection, presence, and appreciating the moment. Our dogs are our inspiration, our best fishing buddies, and the namesake of everything we do.

  • Do you practice catch and release?

Yes — always. We are a 100% barb less catch-and-release operation focused on education, ethics, and conservation. Our goal is to protect and preserve local fisheries so that future generations can experience the same incredible waters we’re lucky enough to guide today.

  • What if I'm new to fly fishing?

Perfect! Beginners are welcome. We specialize in instructional guiding, helping new anglers learn casting, reading water, fly selection, and proper fish handling. You don’t need any prior experience — just a good attitude and a willingness to learn.
